first day in japan
So now we begin.  I’ve been in Tokyo for ~36 hours, and I’m still figuring out all that has changed, or what hasn’t.  Tokyo seems to be doing alright; the city is a little quieter, but not all that much.  It’s still a massive, bustling metropolis unlike any around the world (except maybe New York, hah) and the streets are still unbelievably confusing.  Of course, Shinjuku...

The Myth Of 3-D Immersion →
sporthappens: A great blog post from NPR about why 3-D movies are a gimmick. I find myself trying to argue with the article, saying that 3D allows for more expression of distance and depth in a scene.  But at the same time, I can’t really hold faith in that argument, since we’re able to distinguish that kind of depth in the image on our own, and we don’t need the film to do it...

the rebirth of japan as portrayed by the media
The latest media trend to emerge from the crisis in Japan appears to be the “Japan is back!” suggesting that this disaster will finally shake Japan out of its economic and social malaise it’s suffered ever since Koizumi left office (or even when their 80s bubble popped).  To be honest, I think it could happen!  However, for it to happen would require the entire political...

Wasn’t it you who held off a surrender: Red Cross  →
meigetsu: “Charities are aggressively soliciting donations around this disaster, and I don’t believe these donations necessarily are going to be used for relief or recovery in Japan because they aren’t needed for that,” Mr. Karnofsky said. “The Japanese government has made it clear it has the resources it needs for this disaster.” this is the sort of thing that makes me hesitant to...

a correction from yesterday's post
“is going to japan” was the wrong choice of words.  what might be better is “could maybe go to japan, if everything starts sucking less”

this is possibly the worst-written article about an actually important subject I have read in a long time.  they’re supposed to be writing about the dangers of nuclear radiation, and how japan isn’t so susceptible to them (compared to ukraine) but the article is also about how to prevent radiation poison and cancer, without really ever making a clear distinction between the two...

what do I do now
As I watch the news from across Japan, I can’t help but feel a tremendous pain in my heart, or my gut, as if I am about to vomit.  I think about this place, a place that has consumed my attention, my time, my soul, and I cannot feel as if a part of me has been hurt as well.  Which is, of course, a ridiculous notion - I am not in Japan, and I am doing alright in comparison.  But still, I see...

Stop lights
At 109st tonight, the broadway stop lights stopped working, always stuck on red. As cars approached the intersection, everyone would stop and wait. Some intrepid drivers would realize the error, and then start honking without stopping. But in the end, people would figure out that, in order to cross, they’d have to risk running a red light, even if it was a faulty one. In light of how the 1...
